Description
Every year on January 2 Cape Town celebrates the New Year with the colourful street parade of the “Kaapse Klopse” or marching minstrels, singing and playing jazz. From these historic roots a vibrant jazz culture has developed. The Bo-Kaap, meaning “Above the Cape”, is situated on the slopes of Signal Hill above the Cape Town Waterfront and it is the oldest surviving residential neighbourhood of the city. The rich multicultural history of this neighbourhood in part gave rise to the development of the Kaapse Klopse parade and celebrations.
